Rethinking the Foot: Movement Starts from the Ground Up
Your foot is more than just a base of support — it’s a story of movement, a dynamic system designed to flow through shapes as you move. Each step invites your 26 bones, 33 joints, and 100+ muscles, tendons, and ligaments to dance together through three dimensions:
Pronating (yielding and absorbing)Supinating (gathering and propelling)Balancing (transitioning with grace)When one of these phases gets “stuck,” the whole body feels it — from your ankle to your jaw.Movement doesn’t start at the hip or spine — it starts when your foot meets the ground. I've witnessed the biggest shifts for clients, even with chronic seemingly unrelated issues like neck pain, when they start to consistently work on movement through the foot. How well can you spread and articulate your toes? Is the midfoot offering support or does it need a little strengthening up? There’s a lot you can do and the feet have a massive capacity for change!
Some Easy wins for happy feet
+ Time barefoot/ barefoot shoes ideally on different surfaces and uneven terrain to foster that proprioception and allow for nuanced foot movements.
+ Toe spacers & mini resistance bands for the toes- actively spread the toes, use them, work them, feel them free from shoes! I like the set from @thefootcollective
+ Arch lifts! A simple exercise for my flatter footed friends that helps with that foot buoyancy.
+ Balance, play with props, stand on on leg while you make a brew.
